Fargo has a history of sports going back to its earliest days. Here are some pages about various sports over the years. I make no attempt to cover high school sports.
BASEBALL
Baseball appears to be the first sport in Fargo with the establishment of the Red River Baseball Club on March 31, 1875, just two months after the official founding of Fargo. Fargo was one of the founding franchises of the Northern League when it began in 1902. The team went through several names changes but was known longest as the Twins before the ended operations in 1960. Today the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks, started in 1996, are Fargo's professional baseball team.
College baseball dates back to least 1910 when the Fargo College team played against Concordia College, Fargo High School, the Fargo YMCA, and other nearby teams.
Fargo has had several baseball fields. The first was on the site of the present Meritcare Hospital. Fargo College had a baseball field at the bottom of Dill Hill. For many years, the Twins played at Barnett Field, abandoned in the early 1960's and razed for North High. Today, the Redhawks, and others, play at the at the Newman Outdoor Field built in June 21, 1996. The Newman field is also the home of the NDSU baseball team.
SWIMMING
Swimming options were few in Fargo's early years. The most popular place to swim was in the Red River. There were even swimming exhibitions and a tall diving platform on the river. I know of only two indoor pools in the early years. Fargo Central High School (built in 1921) had an indoor pool. It was small and generally disliked by the students because of the heavy chlorine content and the wet hair with which you went to your next class. The pool was reserved for reluctant students and not open to the public. The YMCA (built in 1905) had a small swimming pool that was available for "Y" members. The new Y (built in 1962) has the largest indoor swimming pool in Fargo (I believe).
Fargo's first public swimming pool was built in the 1930's in Island Park. It is now closed and a new public swimming pool located nearby. The Harry Howland public swimming pool was opened in the early 1960's. It was located on the southeast corner of the old Fairgrounds (Broadway and 17th Avenue North). It was removed and a new pool built adjacent to North High School.
GOLF
The Fargo Country Club, an 18-hole private course located in Southeast Fargo, was established in 1923, although the club dates back to 1898.
The Edgewood Golf Course is an 18-hole public course located in northeast Fargo along the Red River. It was established in the mid-1920's.
The El Zagal Golf Course is located in north Fargo along the Red River. It is a public 9-hole, par-3 course built in 1940.
The Prairiewood Golf Course, a 9-hole public course, is located in southwest Fargo. It was built in 1976.
The Rose Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole public course built in 1993 in south Fargo.
The Oxbow Golf and Country Club is a private course south of Fargo.
There are several golf courses in Moorhead, Minnesota, as well.
FOOTBALL
The first organized football team was likely that of the North Dakota Agricultural College (now NDSU). The team, now well-known as the Bison, began as the "Aggies." The Bison football team plays in the FargoDome. For may years, they played at an outdoor stadium on the north end of the campus.
