Washington House Hotel
The Washington House Hotel was located on the corner of First Avenue and 4th Street. The 75x30 foot building was built by Brown & Sons of St. Paul and constructed of bricks by Anderson Brick. It opened on May 1, 1892. It advertised, in 1899, rates of $1 to $1.50 per day with "good stabling" and "free bus to and from all trains." The proprietor was W.J. Early.
Despite the source that reported the above construction date, the Washington House was listed in 1883, 1893, and 1895/6 Fargo City Directories as being located at 323 First Avenue South.
The building escaped the great fire of 1893 and was the only place to have heat in the 1897 flood. They ran 4 hand pumps 24 hours per day to stay dry and had installed a steam heat plant in 1895.
The building was razed in the 1950's as part of the urban renewal project of that decade. When it was torn down, it had five apartments and 34 roomers living inthe building. A Mobile station was erected on site.
