Site Guide

The Sherman House hotel was well situated for the traveler. The principle means of travel was the railroad and the Sherman House was located at the southwest corner of Front Street and Seventh Avenue South on the west side of the NP tracks.

The Sherman House was built by Terrence Martin in 1877 and sold to Mr. G.J. Kissner in 1879. The Sherman House was still in operation in 1885, as attested by the letterhead on the right.

The image at the top is from a Frank Jay Haynes stereoview [1879-1889], State Historical Society of North Dakota Collection (A5855). A different view (in context of its surroundings) is shown at the center. The bottom view is the latest of the three photographs and shows an addition to the hotel on the west side.

The Waldorf Hotel was built on the site of the Sherman House in 1899.
