The first doctor reported to reside in Fargo was a Dr. Kurtz who was employed by the Northern Pacific railroad to provide medical supervision to construction camps. Dr. Kurtz made his headquarters in Fargo for a time. He treated both railroad construction staff and Fargo settlers. When the railroad pushed west, Doctor Kurtz left Fargo.
Dr. J.B. Crucial moved his office from Moorhead to Fargo about this time. He is listed in the 1883 Fargo City Directory as having an office at 59 Broadway where he is alos lisyed in 1893.. Another early doctor was Dr. F. L. Richter who opened an office in Fargo in July 1875. Dr. Richter came to Fargo from Minneapolis, where he had practiced for many years.
Fargo's best known early physician was Dr. E.M. Darrow [1855-?] who settled in Fargo in 1878 and is listed in the 1883 and 1893 Fargo City Directories as having an office at 610 Front Street.
Doctor William C. Shurlock [1835 - 1892] settled in Fargo in 1880. He is listed in 1893 as having an office at 59 Broadway.
Dr. Hepburn, son-in-law of Dr. Sherlock, moved to Fargo from Grandin and practiced with Dr. Sherlock, until he died of typhoid fever less than a year later.
Dr. Edwin Folsum, a graduate of Boston University School of Medicine and a surgeon in the Civil War moved to Fargo in 1871. He achieved a reputation as a practitioner of Homeopathy and had an office in 1893 at 622-1/2 Second Avenue North.
Dr. John DeWitt McConnell [1848-?], March 1877 graduate of Cincinnati's Medical School of Ohio, settled in Fargo in 1881. Dr. McConnell specialized in diseases of women. He is listed in 1893 as having an office at 65 Broadway and in 1893 at 59 Broadway.
Dr. Henry Capehart [1825-1895] came to reside in Fargo in 1881. He is listed in the 1893 Fargo City Directory as sharing an office with a Dr. Carpenter at 65 Broadway. In 1893, Dr. Capehart and Dr. G.A. Carpenter are listed separetly but both at the same address at 65 Broadway.
Dr. Isaac Newton Wear [1852-?] came to Fargo in 1882. He was joined in practice by Dr. Frank J. Campbell (a graduate of the Chicago Medical College) under the firm name "Wear and Campbell" whose office was listed in 1883 and 1893 as being in the First National bank Building. Dr. Wear was later associated with a Dr. Wheeler.
Dr. Dorcas Green (Fargo's first female doctor ?) is listed as a physician in the 1883 and 1893 Fargo City Directories with an office at 21-1/2 8th Street South. Dr. John D. Henning is listed in 1883 and 1893 as a physician with an office at 58-1/2 Broadway and in 1893 with an office at 59 Broadway..
Dr. M.O. Tiegan is listed in the 1883 Fargo City Directory and in 1893 as having an office at 402-1/2 Front Street. Dr. J.W. Vidal is listed as having an office in the First national Bank Building.
Dr. Rollin Thomas Rolph [1851-? ], Dr. A. F. McKay, Dr. A.O. Squire, Dr. Henry Galloway, Dr. H. Hicks, Dr. W.W. Pierce, Dr. J.W. Walker, and Dr. J. J. Buckley are listed in the 1883 Fargo City Directory but not in the 1893 edition. Apparently their stays in Fargo were short.
Another early doctor whose name has appeared in Fargo is a Dr. Conan.
