Site Guide

The C.E. Shotwell store for ladies furnishings took over the site of the Commercial Bank sometime between 1910 and 1923. As can been seen in the two photographs above, extensive changes were made to the corner of the building to make it square. The building certainly lost some character by the change.

The building on the southwest corner of Front Street (Main Avenue) and Sixth Avenue (602 Front Street) was constructed by the First National Bank in 1879.

Shotwell's changed the facade a few times during its tenure as can be seen in the photographs below. The photograph on the left was taken in 1937 and the photograph on right was taken in 1943.

Shotwell's Clothing

The Shotwell store advertised itself at various times as ladies furnishings, women's wearing apparel, and Shotwell's Ready to Wear near the end of its tenure on Front Street. I don't know the exact date of its demise but Shotwell's was in the location in 1977 but the property was vacant in 1984. Wimmer's Diamonds now occupies the location.
