In 1910, Charles R. Stone, founder of the company, built a new building at 613 First Avenue North to replace his store at 110 Broadway. The three-story building was designed by the Hancock Brothers in Classical Revival style with yellow brick and stone trim. It is pictured in the 1915 postcard drawing in the center right. Note that the "street" shown to the right of the building never existed. During this time, the Dakota Conservatory of Music was housed in the upper floors [as was the N.D. State Fair Association, the Yeoman Office, and other offices].
In the late 1920s, the Depression forced Stone out of business. C.R. Stone's son, Robert, formed a partnership with A.J. Daveau to retain the store. Daveau became the sole owner in 1940 and renamed the store after himself. In 1974, the Schmitt Music Company of Minneapolis purchased Daveau's.
The building was beautifully restored in the 1990's and is now the Avalon Events Center (see the picture below). You can learn more about the Avalon at their web site.
