The Edwards Building was located on the southwest corner of Broadway and Northern Pacific Avenue (as seen in the 1911 postcard above). Alex Stern & Co., clothiers, occupied this space until 1958 when Herbst Department store took over the space. At one time the ground floor housed S & L department store and Bob Fritz Sporting Goods. The space was hit by fire in 1974 and was rebuilt and occupied by Old Broadway since 1975.
Immediately
south of Stern's in the postcard above was the "F.W. Woolworth 5
and 10 Cent Store" located at 24 Broadway.

Edwards' Building
In the late 1890's, the southeast corner of Broadway underwent a transformation. In 1897, the Headquarters Hotel burned down and was not rebuilt. Yerxa's store closed and this left the entire area west of Broadway and north of the NP tracks to NP Avenue open for redevelopment.
The Edward's Building was built in 1899 by Alex Stern (1857-1934) pioneer merchant, builder and financier (president of the Dakota National Bank). Stern lived in Fargo from 1881 when he opened a clothing store until his death. Stern named the building for Major Alanson W. Edwards, founder of several Fargo newspapers including The Forum.
