C.R. Stone arrived at Fargo on July 9, 1885, representing the W.J. Dyer & Bro. music company of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Stone was in charge of their business in North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Stone went into business for himself on February 1, 1894, opening Stone's Music Company at 74 Broadway (pictured top right).

By 1899, the name was changed to Stone's Piano Company and the store had moved to 110 Broadway.

The illustration below right (of the second Stone building) is taken from a 1909 advertisement. It advertised itself immodestly as providing "Everything Known in Music."
