IN the late 1890's, the southeast corner of Braodway underwent a transformation. In 1897, the Headquarters Hotel burned down and was not rebuilt. Yerxa's store closed and this left the entire area west of Bradway and north of the NP tracks to NP Avenue open for redevelopment.

It is during this time that the Edwards' Building was built on the southeast corner of Broadway and NP Avenue. I don't know anything about Mr. Edwards but the corner of the building of leased to Alex Stern. Alex Stern & Co., clothiers, occupied this space until 1958 when Herbst Department store took over the space. The space was hit by fire in 1974 and was rebuilt and occupied by Old Broadway since 1975.
